Restrict access to your LWS e-mail addresses to certain countries

Procédure

What is this option for?

This option allows you toauthorise access to your e-mail only from certain countries.
For example, if you always check your e-mail from France, you can choose to authorise only France in order to reduce connection attempts from other countries. This function exists in the management of e-mail addresses from the LWS Panel and applies to e-mail addresses attached to your domain.

Service concerned

This documentation is intended for users who manage their LWS email addresses from the LWS Panel, in the section linked to personalized emails included with a compatible domain name or shared hosting (shared LWS Linux, Mail Pro, Windows ASP Plesk).

Before getting started

Check the following points:

  • you can connect to your LWS account;
  • you can manage your email from the LWS Panel;
  • You know which domain or e-mail service you want to restrict;
  • you know the countries from which you usually check your e-mail.

Warning

Before activating this option, take the time to think about your usage.

Be sure to add all the necessary countries if :

  • you travel regularly ;
  • you use a VPN;
  • several people consult the same e-mail addresses from different countries;
  • you check your e-mail from several locations or devices abroad.

Otherwise, you risk blocking legitimate access to your own e-mail.

Country restriction is not activated on an address-by-address basis.
It applies to all e-mail addresses linked to the domain concerned. If you change this setting, all the mailboxes in this domain will be affected.

Why limit access by country?

This function can be useful if you want to :

  • limit access attempts from abroad ;
  • strengthen the security of your e-mail;
  • keep control if you always connect from the same geographical area.

In practical terms, this allows you to tell the system which countries are authorised to access your email.

Activate or add a country restriction

Step 1: First log in to your LWS account.

Once logged in, open the service concerned: your shared hosting or your email service, then access the management of your email addresses.

Step 2: Under the heading Email addresses, click on the option Restriction by country.

Step 3: Activate the restriction

Once on the configuration page :

  1. click on Restrict access by country;
    Restrict access to your LWS e-mail addresses to certain countries
  2. wait for the interface for selecting authorised countries to appear.

Activating this option brings up the interface for selecting authorised countries.

Step 4: In the Restriction by country section :

  1. Select the country you wish to authorise (1) ;
  2. click Save configuration (2);
  3. Repeat the operation for each additional country to be authorised.

A simple example

If you always check your e-mail from France :

  • Select France;
  • click Save configuration;
  • Don't add another country if you don't need to.

Remove an existing restriction

If you wish to remove an existing authorisation:

  1. return to the Country Restrictions tab;
    Restrict access to your LWS e-mail addresses to certain countries
  2. locate the country concerned in the list of authorised countries;

  3. Click Delete next to the country.

If you remove all the countries from the list, the restriction will be deactivated and access will once again be open from any country.

Check that the configuration is in place.

After saving your configuration, check the following points:

  • the authorised country or countries appear in the list provided;
  • the restriction is still visible as active in the interface;
  • the countries displayed correspond to your actual requirements.

Expected results

Once the configuration is in place :

  • your email should only be accessible from the countries you have authorised;
  • other countries should no longer be authorised.

Application delay

This action corresponds to a setting saved in the administration interface. It is therefore taken into account immediately.

Best practice

To avoid unnecessary blockages :

  • start by authorising only those countries that are really useful;
  • avoid adding too many countries "just in case";
  • remember to update the list before you travel;
  • recheck the configuration if your connection habits change.

Frequent problems

I can no longer access my email.

First check that the country from which you are connecting is on the list of authorised countries.

Also check whether :

  • you are using a VPN ;
  • your Internet connection is detected from a country other than the one you are in.

If the country used is not authorised, access to email may be blocked.

I'm travelling or working from several countries

If you check your e-mail from several countries, you must add each country concerned to the list of authorised countries.

For example, if you check your e-mail from France part of the time and from Belgium the rest of the time, you need to authorise France and Belgium.

Several people use the domain's e-mail addresses

The country restriction applies to all the e-mail addresses in the domain.

Before activating this function, check the connection habits of all the people concerned. If an employee, a member of your team or another user checks email from another country, that country should also be added to the list.

I use a VPN

A VPN can make your connection appear to come from a different country.

In this case, even if you are physically in an authorised country, access may be denied if the country displayed by the VPN is not on the list of authorised countries.

If necessary, temporarily disable the VPN or add the country corresponding to the connection used.

I've added a country, but it doesn't seem to work

Make sure you click on Save configuration after selecting the country.

Then check that the country appears in the list of authorised countries. If not, repeat the operation.

I want to remove the restriction

If you no longer wish to restrict access by country, go back to the Restriction by country section and delete the authorised countries recorded.

Once all the countries have been removed from the list, the restriction is deactivated and access is once again possible from any country.

Conclusion

You now know how to restrict access to your LWS email addresses to one or more countries from the LWS Panel. This option allows you to better secure your email by reducing the authorized connections to your usual zone of use.
