Whois tools are directories of domain name owners.
Accessible to anyone using a simple web browser, whois tools make it possible to find all the contact details declared by each domain name holder: surname, first name, postal address, e-mail address, telephone number, etc.
These details could be used by malicious companies to send offers to buy your domain name, or to send unwanted advertising.
There are hundreds of sites where you can run Whois searches, such as http://whois.domaintools.com
The results of a Whois search look like the image below:
Anonymous whois makes it possible toanonymise the details of domain name owners in official whois tools.
Since the RGPD (General Data Protection Regulation) came into force on 25 May 2018, LWS has activated Anonymous Whois for all individuals. However, legal entities (companies, associations, etc.) are still required to display their contact details, with only the email address being replaced by an alias in Anonymous Whois.
Difference between legal entities and natural persons with Anonymous Whois :
Legal entity | Natural person | |
Name | yes | no |
Postal address | yes | no |
Country | yes | yes |
Email address | hidden by an alias | hidden by an alias |
Whois Anonyms is applied to domain names managed byICANN, i.e. the most common generic extensions (.com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, .co, .cc etc as well as all the new extensions such as .photos, .boutique, .maison etc).
The domain names managed by Afnic (.fr, .yt, .re, .pm, .wf) registered in the name of an individual automatically have a restricted distribution of contact details in the Whois tools, at no extra cost.
Many registries (Eurid for .eu domain names, Dns.lu for .lu domain names, etc.) refuse to anonymise the data of domain name holders.
The contact details will then be replaced by the word Anonymous, as in the image below:

Bonjour,
(https://aide.lws.fr/a/264)
Cordialement, L'équipe LWS
